Outreach activities

At LIPS, we help K12 students in their STEM education and inspire them to consider careers in science and engineering fields. In additon, we develop and offer online courses for the programs at the UA Outreach College.

SARSEF 2015 (March 10, 2015)

We served as judges at the 2015 Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair (SARSEF 2015).

Currently managed by SciEnTek-12 Foundation, SARSEF began in 1955 with a mission of empowering Southern Arizona K-12 students to participate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Around 75,000 students participate to the fair each year. Winners get awards at the end of the fair and advance to the higher level competitions, including the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). For the last 14 years, more than 60 percent of SARSEF winners get an award at ISEF!

We served as judges for middle and elementary school projects.

SARSEF 2014 (March 11, 2014)

We served as judges at the 2014 Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair (SARSEF 2014).

At SARSEF 2014, judges helped to rank 4428 students, 55% of which were female, resulting in 479 Grand Awards totaling for $27,680. We served as judges for middle and elementary school projects.

A new online course (Spring 2014)

In Spring 2014, we will be teaching Detection and Estimation Theory (ECE 639) for the online MS program in ECE.

This outreach effort helps students outside the UA campus, especially working professionals, to continue their education and get an MS degree. To facilitate remote learning, we have developed course materials including fill-in-the-blank type lecture notes (a sample). Here is a copy of the syllabus.

``I've been enjoying the class and although it's been like drinking from a fire hose at times since my probability/linear systems theory isn't as strong as it probably should be, I feel like I've learned a great deal and have already been able to apply some of these concepts at work.''
